BrightLocal is a toolkit. Cairn is one job, done plainly.
BrightLocal is a genuinely good platform with more in it than Cairn has, or wants. That breadth is the whole difference — and for some businesses it is the reason to buy it, so this page says when.
The honest version
BrightLocal does more than Cairn does. Citation building across directories, listing accuracy, review requests and monitoring, site audits, white-label reports for clients, tiers that run to a hundred locations. Cairn does none of that and has no plan to. If you need a toolkit, you want the toolkit, and this comparison ends here with our blessing.
Cairn is for the owner of one business who wants three things: where do I actually show up across my city, who is beating me and why, and what should I do this week. Everything in the product answers one of those, and anything that does not is left out on purpose.
Where Cairn differs
The grid is the product, not a feature. On BrightLocal the geo-grid lives inside the Track plan alongside everything else, with five keywords on it before add-ons. Cairn has one screen and the grid is it — Watch re-scans ten searches every week, Pro runs twenty-five on a finer 7×7. That is not just a bigger number: ten searches is the point where the map can tell you which kind of problem you have. Weak everywhere for every search is your profile. Weak in one place for one search is that search. Three cannot separate those.
Boundaries, not dots. A dot grid says “we measured at these coordinates.” Cairn draws the same data onto real neighborhood and city lines, so the map says “you’re invisible in Lakewood and Edgewater” — something you can act on and recognize as your own streets.
A sentence, not a dashboard. This is the difference that matters most and it is the hardest to show on a feature table. A platform gives you instruments and expects you to read them. Cairn writes you the sentence: down this much of the map for this search, here is who took which areas, here is the move. When nothing needs your attention, it says so and stops.
The free scan is free, not a trial. Cairn’s scan withholds nothing — no email gate, no blurred score, no clock — and the map stays yours whether or not you ever pay. BrightLocal’s trial is fourteen days of full access with no card, which is a genuinely fair offer; it just ends. The paid plans here sell the watching, never your own results.

|---|---|---|
| What it is | One job: where you rank across your city, and what to do about it | A local SEO platform: rank tracking, citations, listings, reviews, audits, client reporting |
| The geo-grid | The product. Watch re-scans 10 searches weekly; Pro runs 25 on a finer 7×7 | One feature of the Track plan — five keywords on the grid, expandable with add-ons |
| The map | Real neighborhood and city boundaries — “here's what Lakewood sees” | A geo-grid of colored dots at coordinates |
| Entry price | $59/mo Watch (then $129 Pro, $399 Studio) — 20% off annually | $39/mo Track for one location — $29.25 billed annually |
| What $59/mo buys | Watch: ten searches re-scanned weekly, the one you are closest to winning named, and whether the problem is your profile or that search | Grow, their top single-location tier: the whole platform — rank tracking, listings, reviews, audits, reporting |
| Searches on the grid | 10 on Watch · 25 on Pro (7×7) · 125 across Studio's five businesses — included, no add-ons | 5 on the Local Search Grid, expandable to 30 with add-ons |
| What the searches are for | Enough of them that the map can say whether it's your profile or one search — and name the one you're closest to winning | Rank positions across the grid; the diagnosis is yours to make |
| Add-on costs | None. The plan is the price | Citation Builder billed separately, around $2 per citation; Managed SEO is $1,299/mo |
| Free version | A complete scan — full map, competitors, fixes. No email, no card, no clock, and it stays yours | 14-day full-access trial of everything, no card required |
| What arrives when something changes | A sentence: what moved, who took it, what to do. Silence when nothing needs you | Dashboards and scheduled reports you go and read |
| Built for | The owner of one business (Studio: an agency with five) | Agencies and multi-location brands — tiers go to 100+ locations |
We cost more. Here is the arithmetic.
BrightLocal starts at $39 a month for one location, and its top single-location tier is $59 — the same as Cairn’s entry plan. So at fifty-nine dollars you can have their entire platform or our one screen, and their cheapest plan is twenty dollars less than ours. We would rather you see that here than discover it after signing up.
What the difference buys is not more features. It is that the one thing you need to look at is the only thing there. A platform earns its price when someone opens it every week; if that person is you and you enjoy it, BrightLocal is more tool for less money and you should take it. Cairn is priced for the owner who was never going to open a dashboard — who wants the map to arrive already read, with the sentence about what moved and what to do, and nothing else to learn. Software you do not open is expensive at any price.
On the one axis where we do compete directly, the count runs the other way: at the same $59, Watch re-scans ten searches across your city every week where their grid carries five before add-ons, and Pro carries twenty-five. We would rather spend the difference there than on breadth — because ten searches is the point where the map stops reporting and starts diagnosing.
What a search costs, either way
If the map is the thing you came for, the fair question is what one watched search costs a month. This divides the whole plan price by the searches it puts on the grid — which is generous to us and hard on them, because their price also buys citations, listings, reviews and reporting that Cairn does not do at all. Read it as “what am I paying for the map”, not as a verdict on the product.
| Per month | Price | Searches watched weekly | Cost per search |
|---|---|---|---|
| Watch 5×5 | $59 | 10 | $5.90 |
| Pro 7×7 | $129 | 25 | $5.16 |
| Studio 7×7 | $399 | 125 | $3.19 |
| BrightLocal Track | $39 | 5 | $7.80 |
BrightLocal's Local Search Grid carries five searches before add-ons, on Track ($39) through Grow ($59) alike — so the cost per watched search rises as you move up their tiers, to $11.80 on Grow. Add-ons take the grid to 30; we have no published add-on price, so it is not costed here.
Why ten searches, and not three
Because the search you would have picked is not always the one your customers type. A business can be first for a term forty people a month look for and invisible for the one nine hundred use — and every rank tracker in the category, ours included until you watch enough of them, will report that as success. Watching ten is how you find out which of your searches actually carries demand.
Once ten are running the map can do something three never could: tell you which kind of problem you have. Weak everywhere across every search is your profile. Weak in one neighborhood for one search is that search. And it can name the one you are closest to owning, because the spots where you already place in the top three without being #1 are the cheapest ground you will ever take. Ten is not generosity — it is the smallest number that makes those readings possible, and it costs us about twenty cents a search to run, so there was no honest reason to ration it.
When BrightLocal is the better buy
Honesty is the brand, so plainly: if you manage locations for clients, or more than a handful of your own, buy BrightLocal. If you need citations built and kept accurate across dozens of directories, buy BrightLocal — Cairn will tell you your listing is wrong and will not fix it for you. If you want review requests, reputation monitoring and reports with your own logo on them, buy BrightLocal. And if you are comparing on price, buy BrightLocal — they are twenty dollars cheaper at the entry and their fourteen-day trial is full access with no card, which is a fair way to find out.
Cairn is the better pick when you own one business, you do not want to learn a platform, and the question keeping you up is why the phone is quieter than your reviews say it should be.
Prices checked on 30 August 2026 for a single location: Track $39/mo, Manage $49/mo, Grow $59/mo, about 25% less billed annually. Pricing changes and varies with location count, so treat these as the shape and check their site for a quote.
